The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of a prefabricated, adjustable immediate postoperative prosthesis (IPOP), the Air-Limb™, for transtibial amputees. A prospective clinical study was designed to evaluate patient outcomes, and those results were compared with a retrospective review of a matched historic control group of 23 transtibial amputees, for whom standard soft dressings (SD) were used for postoperative management.

The following data were collected: number of complications per month/patient, number of falls per month/patient, and number of revisions. These data were also collected for the SD group. There were three complications in 3 patients (3/19, 15.8%) in the IPOP group and 15 complications in 8 patients (8/23, 35%) in the SD group. There were 11 falls in 7 patients (7/19, 37%) in the IPOP group and 34 falls in 12 patients (12/23, 52%) in the SD group. No revisions occurred in the IPOP group; 11 occurred in the SD group. The average time to first custom prosthetic fitting was 104 days in the IPOP group and 159 days in the SD group.

In conclusion, patients in the IPOP study group had fewer falls, fewer postoperative complications, fewer revisions, and a shorter time to first custom prosthetic.
